Boom Bip: website / myspace

Community television network KCET added to its website today a feature on up-and-coming Los Angeles musicians, as the most recent installment of the network’s Webstories series. Written by Mark Sovel, musical director of local independent radio station Indie 103, the article succinctly surveys LA’s current musical landscape by taking in a small sampling of the visionary sounds pulsing from the city’s vast and sprawling suburbs.

Amongst the artists highlighted in the feature is much-jocked and blogged-about Cincinnati-cum-Echo Park nob twister, Boom Bip (birth name: Bryan Hollon). Included within his section of the piece is video of a recent interview with the gent himself, conducted at the deluxe, Dust Brothers-owned Boat Studio out in Silverlake. In addition to the interview, two songs are available for download (one of which was posted here not too long ago…ahem). Listenable too is a stream of “Raquel”, the new single from Boom Bip and Super Furry Animals front man Gruff Rhys’ joint endeavor, Neon Neon.

Over the course of the interview, Hollon cites his longing to avoid a Postal Service-type work relationship with Rhys, acknowledges his teenage obsession with Dokken and Yngwie Malmstein and the hands they had in shaping his earliest ventures into bedroom recording, and discusses the process of playing live electronic music with organic instruments. Also seen is a somewhat surprising cameo by Strokes drummer Fab Moretti, who can be added as yet another contributor to Hollon and Rhys’ hyper-collaborative side project.

Based on the infectiousness of ‘Trick For Treat’, ‘Raquel’, and the background music that lingers throughout the interview — some of which I’ll assume to be stray tracks from the forthcoming record — there’s certainly reason to be geeked for whatever more Boom Bip and Neon Neon have up their sleeves.
