Though I’ve been short on time, I wanted to make sure these posts stuck close to schedule, so I apologize for the absolute lack of jabber over the last couple of parts. Peel your eyes and keep them as such (in spite of the obvious pain that doing so might cause) for Part 5 later on in the day, and for words very soon!

Battles

57. Battles: Ddiamondd / MP3 / $$$

Prior to my formal introduction to the band through a number of mid-morning listens, I knew very little of Battles besides the fact that frequent Prefuse 73 collaborator Tyondai Braxton was a member. Upon further inspection, I found that I knew very little in relation to Braxton himself at the time, besides the fact that the dying 1990s R&B enthusiast in me had quietly hoped for some sort of relation to Toni. I am now proud to say that I know slightly more about the band, and Braxton, and have given up all hope for cousinhood. “Ddiamondd” is one of the more compact and combustible songs on their debut LP, Mirrored, and is certainly the song to which I’ve clung the most.

Tyondai is the son of avant-garde jazz saxaphonist Anthony Braxton!

77/7; part 1

January 6, 2008

Greetings, and welcome to part 1 of The Missing Dufresnes’ exceptionally overdue 2007 review. During the course of the next week, I’ll be posting my favorite songs from the year that’s passed.

A collection of songs that had initially, last week, started out in my head as quaint ballooned into one of absurd length; hoping not to overdo it — “don’t let me do it to you, dunny” — I trimmed said list down into a slightly smaller (though only moderately less ridiculous) size. To further mask the intemperance of my song selection, I opted to hide it behind a cute numbers gimmick. And so, this is my 77 over ‘7.

Part 1.

The Bird and The Bee

77. The Bird and The Bee: La La La / MP3 / $$$

Space-age bachelor pad stuff, similar to Broadcast, but a tad warmer.

When I saw them perform at The Grove in October, it was as a duo; singer-guitarist Inara George and keyboard player Greg Kurstin playing in front of pre-recorded beats. They made mention during their set that they usually play with a fuller group, and I’m eager to hear how they would sound all together, because they were great, just the two.

On that night, as the drums first rolled in for the chorus of ‘I’m a Broken Heart’, Inara turned on a small electric bubble blower and lifted it up with her free hand while she lightly strode the edge of the stage, singing and floating out orbs of soap over the crowd. It was well planned cuteness, and worked the audience wonderfully…before the bubble machine choked midway through and refused to participate in the rest of the chorus.

“I’m a broken heart,
I’m a broken heart,
I’m a brok–
Huh! It’s broken.”

So she improvised.

Taking the dark green bottle of whatever she’d been drinking on-stage, she tipped its lip to the mouth of the blower, poured, and flipped the switch to an explosion of bubbles (and applause). Soap and alcohol drifted on the a/c currents and popped on peoples’ heads for five minutes afterwards.

Not dead! Just overcome for a while by family and holiday stuff, and subsequently seduced into laziness by the hulking mass of quiet that came to follow. Regular posting will resume quite soon (all due respect to Mr. Hernandez, but I am not sure that this counts as such). Please check in during the next several days as I post a slightly tardy and overly long list of my favorite songs of 2007.
